This year the 2017 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is celebrating triple anniversaries: the 60th anniversary of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca; the 60th anniversary of Formula Junior; and the 70th anniversary of Ferrari. It looks to be 3x the fun at the already exciting event for motorsports fans during Monterey Car Week.
The Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) developed Laguna Seca Raceway in mid-1957 and still manages the circuit, though it is owned by Monterey County. SCRAMP was founded by a group of businessmen united in their interest in keeping road racing on the peninsula.
After tragedy ended the Pebble Beach Road Races in the Del Monte Forest, organizers found a new venue at Laguna Seca Raceway and held the tracks inaugural race on November 9, 1957. Though this particular race series ended six years later, the racing never stopped.
Sixty years later now the iconic Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, is alive and well with a full offering of significant race events throughout the season. The 60th anniversary will be celebrated all year long, which will be especially festive during the Rolex-Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
In honor of their Diamond Jubilee World Tour, Formula Juniors that ran between 1958 and 1963, will showcase the largest group of Formula Juniors to assemble in North America.
Ferrari has a significant connection to road racing on the Monterey Peninsula, including one very meaningful event, a Ferrari 500 Testa Rossa was the first winner of the inaugural race at the opening of Laguna Seca Raceway in November, 1957. Ferrari was only ten years old, but had become a major player in the world of motorsports. Racing successes allowed Ferrari to build and sell road cars which in turn fueled the interest in the prancing horse today.
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion runs August 17-20, advance hospitality, VIP, preferred parking and general admission tickets to the are available at www.MazdaRaceway.com. See you there!
