This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the premier car event for discerning automotive collectors and enthusiasts, promises to have some eye candy like you’ve never seen before. Each year the annual Sunday smörgåsbord of the world’s most fabulous cars features a handful of very special car classes to the delight of onlookers. This August’s automotive celebration presents five amazing car classes certain to be the stars at Pebble Beach.
Cesare Isotta and the brothers Vincenzo, Antonio and Oreste Fraschini founded one of Italy’s premier luxury automakers in 1900. They built cars for the rich, famous, royalty and even a Pope. Like many car companies the depression followed by WWII put an end to car making in 1949. The luxurious long lean chassis was a rival to Bugatti amongst others in the classic era.
Each year the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance features a coachbuilder. This year the work of Castagna Coachwork founded by Carlo Castagna in 1849 in Milan, Italy, will be one of the featured classes. Castagna coachwork can be found on certain Alfa Romeo, Isotta Franschini, Mercedes-Benz, and Lancia cars.
American Dream Cars of the 1960s
Just what is a dream car? An automobile someone takes from dream to reality by the vocation of their own talents or those of small extraordinary custom car builders is a considered a dream car. It may have parts and pieces of production cars which are usually indistinguishable due to the flamboyant stylized appearance. Fueled purely by a desire to create and build a better car than what was feasible for a big production line, custom builders across the nation showcased their artistry on wheels.
Ferrari One-off Spéciales
Engaging a car company such as Ferrari to customize a car, creating a one of a kind automobile to one’s personal specifications is an option available to a select few. Past and present Ferrari enthusiasts have come up with some very unusual creations. Rock icon Eric Clapton, real estate mogul Peter Kalikow, Jim Glickenhaus and other gazillionare enthusiasts across the globe present Ferrari designers with specifications and millions of dollars later, Ferrari delivers some spectacular one-off speciales.
Ferrari Major Race Winners
Scuderia Ferrari is the oldest and most successful Formula One team in racing history. Ever since Argentine José Froilán González drove a Ferrari 375 to victory in 1951 at Silverstone, Ferrari has been winning major races. This 1959 Ferrari 250 TR59 Fantuzzi Spyder driven by Phil Hill, Olivier Gendebien, Dan Gurney and Chuck Daigh won first overall in the 1959 Sebring 12 Hours. As race cars often end their lives in pieces and true vintage race cars today are purely an amalgamation or recreation of the actual old car, it will be a treat to see what winners the Pebble Beach show field has in store for us.
