Get The Scoop on Zen-Mod Outdoor Living from Mod Design Guru

Blogtour gang 2For a different take on outdoor decorating, I tapped my Mod Design Guru pal from BlogTour Cologne, Michele Alfano, to offer up some edgy outdoor living ideas for you.  Enjoy!

Flowers are now in full bloom and days are growing longer and we all want to be outside. More and more, people are entertaining at home, desiring a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy with family and friends. If you want to achieve a space where you feel at ease and want your friends to linger, create a Zen-MOD outdoor room. To achieve the feeling of ahhhh, infuse four essential elements: natural materials, fire, lighting and greenery.

To attain Zen-Mod simplicity and calmness, start off by choosing clean lined furnishings made out of natural wood, concrete, and metals. Here are some pieces to inspire you…
My eye feels at ease with the minimalist lines and tapered geometric legs of this Raw Concrete table from Teak Warehouse. The table atop with moss emits a calming Zen aura.
Loving the clean lines of this reclaimed redwood Mesa Table by Room & Board. The wood has some history – originally the wood was used as brewery vats but over time brewers changed to stainless steel and the wood vats were sold to the Dykhouse Pickle Company.
The wood is now re-purposed. How cool is that? Paired with modern upholstered seating, this table draws you in to experience Zen-MOD tranquility.
The Fermob Ultra sofa by Frederic Sofia is an inventive shaped one-piece outdoor lounge that can be adjusted to suit every comfort need: sitting, lying down, reading position. Its extra comfort comes from a thick foam lining. I really like its waterproof Vintage Almond green fabric with lemon frame. Solid colors rather than patterns suit the Zen-Mod style.
Pair the Ultra lounge with these raw beauties… These Reclaimed End Tables/Stools by Room & Board are re-purposed Douglas fir beams from the 1880’s Rapids Chair factory. Each piece will patina  and show its natural character over time…
Define your outdoor living room with a rug. The water-resistant Berkshire Ozark rug by Outdoor Rugs Only has soothing ivory/silver colors. It is crafted of 100% weather resistant polypropylene and is mildew and mold resistant. It won’t fade either!

Room & Board also has some great contemporary and environmentally friendly Eco-Smart fireplaces to give you that Zen-like feel and are great for entertaining outdoors. So lets get cozy… Each fireplace below is ventless and uses bio ethanol, a renewable liquid that burns cleanly without any smoke or mess.

The brushed stainless steel and glass Mini T fireplace above is great for adding some drama in a small way.

The Synergy Aspect Fireplace is rectangular in shape with a small glass panel in-front. It is 45″ X 19″ X 47″ in dimension and is powder-coated stainless steel,  finished in white or black.Like a modern campfire, the 24″ diameter powder-coated stainless steel Dish Fireplace is great for a deck or back-porch. Only in black finish.

The modern Contempo Round Pit by Teak Warehouse is made out of concrete composite. It attaches to a propane tank and includes some stone rocks to distribute heat. The 47″ diameter is a perfect focal point and size to arrange intimate conversations in mind.

Light is another important element to achieve Zen balance and harmony in your outdoor space…
The Harry Garden lamp is a cool looking lantern that would beautifully accentuate pathways and edges of your outdoor room. It is made of white polyethylene and has a sharp white glow. It can be adapted into floor lamps as shown in pic below.
The essential component to Zen is planters with beautiful greenery…

The modern Monsoon planter (pic on the left) by IAP is a take off of the window box. The fiberglass comes in many painted options and takes on different looks with each finish. The Steel square planters (pic on the right) by Room & Board is sleek and comes in multiple sizes. They look great grouped together.

Have fun with the ideas above and enjoy the great outdoors!  If you want to read more of Michele’s hip ideas head over to her blog: Mod Design Guru.
