On May 15 the running of the 2014 Mille Miglia began in Brescia, Italy in over 400 vintage automobiles built between 1927 and 1957. This annual open road endurance race event covers 1,708 km heading south through the majestic terrain and small towns of Italy along the route to Rome where the trek turns back for the final half to return on Sunday the 18th. While this is not a full out race as auto racing would go, the drivers maintain times and speeds from checkpoint to checkpoint, drama is still available. Watching these old cars is a thrill as many are driven by well known race drivers, celebrities, (Jay Leno is driving an old Jaguar), royalty and other noted automotive enthusiasts. It is especially exciting when cars which actually ran in one or more of the original 24 races, are participating. Fortunately one doesn’t have to be there to enjoy the excitement, social media is the place to enjoy the event from anywhere in the world. Follow along and enjoy.
Start with the official 1000 Miglia website and 1000 Mille Miglia Facebook page which has live coverage and great You Tube video links. You don’t have to speak Italian, we all speak automobile which is just fine. Their Instagram feed is even better, loaded with live photos they’ve aggregated from others all around the course: Mille-Miglia_Italy.
If you don’t have Instagram, get it – this is where some of the best live real time photos are. While some photos are posted on Twitter, I’ve seen more on Instagram. Enjoy!
