Forget everything you’ve ever heard about Hawaii being expensive or touristy, those people just aren’t tapping it right. Transport yourself to the Hawaiian Island of Maui and become one with all the beauty Hawaii has to offer. There are even plenty of things you can enjoy on Maui for free. Your eyes scan the mass of deep blue pacific ocean peeking in and out of the coastal haze as you stare out your airplane window in anticipation of the first glimpse of Hawaii. Dollops of velvety green mounds which make up the islands jut out from the ocean.
If you’ve never been, Hawaii is one of the most enchanting places on earth to vacation, specifically the island of Maui. From the moment you step off the plane there is something quite special about Hawaii which infects you take your first breath of the warm humid air. Yep, there is a smell, a pretty smell aside from the wonderful plumeria flowers you’ll bump into.
Look no further than the Fairmont Kea Lani for a place to stay. Every room is a suite, and as far as we’ve seen and heard = biggest rooms in Maui. Perfect for families or just the two of you. The food, pools and beach are fabu – but I’m not wasting pictures on this. You wanna see the pretty stuff.
Their rooms aren’t the most beautiful from a design standpoint, but as you’ll see from my next photo… one tends to be looking outside not in. Everything, and I mean everything becomes clearer. Mentally and literally. Colors are more vivid. Shapes are more defined and there are about 1000 new shades of green and blue you’ve never encountered before. When you leave, even your life becomes clearer – your mind becomes settled and you know you’ll be coming back.
Life slows down. Happiness swirls around you like some mythic Hawaiian spell.RELAX in peace. In case you were wondering, fashionable tourist wear for Hawaii is the polar opposite of Palm Beach where one needs beach jewels and poolside Louboutins. Packing is easy breezy: t-shirts and shorts. A sundress or sarong is as dressy as one gets. Heels would be flip-flops. There is no fashion parade on the way to dinner, “oh look at what she is wearing.” I even wore Crocs!
Relax and just be.
From morning until night all of your senses are on alert making permanent imprints in your brain. For those who love the flora and the fauna, everywhere you look there is something to enchant your senses.
Once you’ve been to Hawaii, the magic of the islands always stays with you, including the flavors - like this delicious dinner from Mama’s Fish House. One can’t leave Maui without at least lunch or dinner at Mama’s, it is fine dining Hawaiian style on the north shore of Maui. Commune to the “house of the sun” – what the name means in Hawaiian.
Not being the nature hike type of people, this did not stop us from gushing at the sight of the interior of Haleakela, the old volcano which is responsible for forming Maui and rises over 9,000 feet above the sea. Drive up, stop, keep driving, stop again, keep driving until you get as far as you can then walk around and enjoy. The ride back down is equally spectacular.
What’s this Hawaii doesn’t have to be expensive idea? Or too expensive for kids? Not so. This is way better than any Disney-esque, commercialized or techno vacation. This is a MUST TAKE THE KIDS vacation. Yep, I did just write that. Wonders never cease.Hawaii is a wonderful place for kids. Unlike what one might think, all the good stuff is FREE! Sure the plane ride costs to get there, but there are places to stay or camp in any price range. But when it comes to activities, like the saying goes the best things in life are free.
- All it takes to enjoy the sea life is to walk into the ocean, no fancy equipment required.
- Hawaii has numerous different eco systems from desert to rainforest all in a few square miles.
- Whale watching from the water’s edge is spectacular.
- From the lava strewn shores of Makena use the large waves as your magnifying glass to see native sea turtles and other sea life.
- Watch the sun rise from the top of an extinct volcano.
Did I gush enough? Too much? Tough beans. One can’t even begin to dip into the tip of all of what Maui has to offer in a mere blog post. Go. Really, this is at the very least a bucket list item. Once you get the spirit of Hawaii running through your veins, life will never be the same.
