Upholstered Walls Are More Than Just Pretty

If you’ve ever walked into a room with upholstered walls and spoken, you’d notice an immediate quietness almost a compression of sound.  When you place your hand on the wall and feel the texture of  fabric there is a give which springs back immediately on removal.  You know you’ve entered some place special.

Upholstering walls in fabric has been done for centuries in traditional decor but it also works well in areas of the modern home.  Very popular in Europe, it seems to be finding legs here in the States as people look for ways to make their homes more unique.  When you are looking beyond the same old hard surfaces of paint or wallpaper upholstered walls have a lot to offer.

Walls upholstered in fabric is a great trick for dampening the echo in a room – perfect for the powder room with hard floors close to an entertaining area (nobody wants to hear what is going on in there).

Dining rooms can be a sea of hard surfaces allowing every ting of a piece of silverware on a plate or clink of a glass to bounce around the room destroying cozy conversations.  Upholstered walls make a dining room friendly.

Bedrooms are another popular choice.  Just looking at this bedroom below gives one the feeling of being cocooned into the perfect slumber.

Upholstered walls work well for home theaters, family rooms or even long corridors as a way to minimize sound transfer.  They can serve double duty as a excellent choice to hide any unsightly old cracked plaster, which is still stable but would require a tear down to fix.

Is this a DIY project?  If you have the patience of Buddha and are single with no family members to terrorize in the process, maybe.  If you prefer to be pleased with the results and not scream about the $$ you wasted, hire a professional like VE Thoman Walls and Upholstery Services who specializes in this type of wall treatment.  Upholstered walls have characteristics beyond adding dimension and beauty to walls which makes it a useful wall treatments for any home.
