If there was one word to use to describe all the colorful BMW’s flitting about during Monterey Car Week it would be jazzy. Their hopped up racing stripes and explosive color combinations made the crayola hued Miuras appear almost mundane. From the famous BMW Art Cars to touring cars and those with eccentric road racing liveries, all were on the Monterey Peninsula to celebrate 100 years of BMW. Here are a few of the kaleidoscopic BMWs on the peninsula.
1930 BMW 3/15 DA2 Cabriolet
1937 BMW 328
1957 BMW 507 Roadster Series1
BMW M1

BMW Turbomeister
Jeff Koons BMW Art Car
Alexander Calder BMW Art Car
While this car is often associated with the Art Cars, this 1979 BMW Procar M1 painted by Frank Stella has a bit of a different story. The artist was not commissioned by BMW. While this car was being built for legendary driver Peter Gregg he attended the 1978 Italian Grand Prix with his buddy, artist Frank Stella, to watch a friend Ronnie Petersen compete. Unfortunately Petersen lost his life at the race. As a tribute to him, Stella created this design which was applied to the car while still at the factory.
