4 Qualities of Gold Medal Hallways and Stairways

Since the start of the Olympic Games is in a couple of days I thought we’d get into the spirit with the most physical spaces in a home, halls and stairs.  Hallways and stairways are the interior freeways of our home.  They have entrances and exits and their purpose is to shuffle us from one location to the next.  Like a freeway people enter without signaling too and park items in the way which causes disruption.

Hallways which are open and spacious are the most inviting.  Nowadays an empty hallway can offer a feeling of luxury especially at an entrance where one can come in, rest and just process for a moment before their next step. This Dash & Albert runner makes this stairway lively and encourages movement.  There are no distractions.  Go up, go down and keep moving.Once inside the front door it is lovely to offer a spot to sit to remove ones shoes (stilettos on wood floors are a big no no) and a table to place the hostess gift on while one removes their wrap. When you look at each of these Gold Medal hallways and stairs each of them embody all four attributes.   While having a generous space is nice one can create the feeling of space by banishing the clutter on the walls and the floor.  A wonderful hallway is easy to move through, same for the stairs which means stairs are not for decorative display.  Hallways and stairways must move people first, decoration comes second… unless you prefer a traffic jam.
