Cars From 2011 Classic Sports Sunday at Mar-A-Lago

Oh, what to wear… this was the big question on Sunday morning for all of us women who packed a nice dress expecting warm Palm Beach weather before heading off to the Concours event.  Though I learned from previous trips to forgo the YSL heels, they don’t work well on the lawn.  High 60’s is not warm.   Thankfully a navy Chanel jacket & ballerina flats always work in a pinch.  Hey, it was a sea of blue blazers what was one more?

Do I have to carry everything? Bellini?

We were thankful for the sun on the glimmering cars as well as our backs as we walked amongst the crowd of Ferraris, Rolls, Mercedes, Jaguars and other classic automobiles on the beautiful grounds of Mar-a-Lago.  A little known car called the Briggs Cunningham or Cunningham was the featured marque of the event.

What is a Cunningham?  Believe it or not it was a car built in West Palm Beach back in the 1950’s by noted race car driver Briggs Cunningham.  The popular C-3 series bodies were designed by the famous Carrozzeria Vignale of Turin, Italy, hence the similarities to a Ferrari from the same period.  This was billed as the largest gathering ever of these cars.  There were only a handful built and it is unknown how many are still in existence.  The Miles Collier Collection brought some of their cars as did the Cunningham family.  Now how is this for a small world… a couple at our table who brought a Cunningham from a private collection and one of  Briggs Cunningham’s other race cars came from about 5 miles down the road from where I grew up in Harbor Springs, Michigan?  Whoa.  You never know.

Here is another car I’d never heard of and couldn’t find of drop on information on, a Sinclair.  It’s is totally gorgeous.  Look at the toolkit in the back.  This is functional design at it’s best.

I’ll have to indulge in the beauty of Donald Trump’s  Mar-a-Lago Club, the spectacular home built by Marjorie Merriweather Post in the 1920’s in another post.  Of course it is fabulous and makes a nice outdoor venue for a car event.  Oh, and yes Mr. Trump did walk the lawn of the show later in the afternoon but I honored his request for no photographs.  Why didn’t I just wear golf apparel?

How about this brand new 2011 Ferrari GTO which was unveiled at a number of events over the past few days.  This was the perfect event to end the Ferrari Cavallino Classic weekend.  Enjoy!
