Get ready to change up your interior to make sure you remain on trend with 2020 Colors of The Year. Each year paint companies announce a new Color of The Year, and though we can’t invest in new interiors every year there are ways to infuse your home with these new colors. Here are some safe ideas on how to use colors of the year for 2020.
The one blessing in this whole Color of The Year trend is you can pick whomever’s color you gravitate to because fortunately they are different, very different.
Last week Benjamin Moore announced ‘First Light’ as their Color of The Year 2020. Looking at the paint deck in my hand (never trust a computer screen for exact color replication) the color is not quite beige or pink, it is in between, rather a really light shade of pinky-brown.
West Coast based Dunn-Edwards® released their 2020 Color Of The Year Minty Fresh (DE5687) a few days prior. This color you really need to see up close because its much better than what you might think. Its not an icy 1950s minty green, though with this color and the one from Benjamin Moore, there is certainly a 50s overtone. Minty Fresh is a softer, not quite muddy hue, its nice.
In September Sherwin Williams announced Naval SW 6244 as their 2020 Color Of The Year.
The first to announce was PPG Paints with Chinese Porcelain PPG1160-6 as their 2020 Color Of The Year.
These shades of blue are timeless colors. They might be trendy now, but they won’t be a date stamp tomorrow. Blue and white porcelain has been in and out of vogue for centuries. Navy blues are like denim, they just work.
Pantone hasn’t released their selection yet though it is rumored to be colors of the sea. Oddly enough the Australian team of Jack + Huei took creative license with Pantone by spoofing their 2020 Color Of The Year as Bleached Coral, to highlight the plight of the Great Barrier Reef, read more here.
Once you’ve picked the Color Of The Year you wish to embrace, here is how to use it.
Paint is the obvious choice, gotta love this ombre version from Pinterest. With paint you can be exact in choosing the color, because they are already created for you. Or rather than trying to match the EXACT color, maybe it doesn’t work well in your space, you can allow the Color of The Year to influence you. Pick the color how you see it, it’ll work. If you want to call a blush pink your version of ‘First Light’ nobody is going to mind.
Tile is another great option. It doesn’t have to be a solid wall of this new color, a hint of the ‘First Light’ or ‘Minty Fresh’ will do the trick. This way after a few years have gone by your interior won’t risk looking dated. 
Both of these by Sicis have a hint of the color without going overboard and can remain looking great for years. 
With timeless blues like ‘Naval’ and ‘Chinese Porcelain’ you have more leeway with something like this glass tile from Glass Tile Oasis. Go ahead, do an entire backsplash, shower walls or floor.
These incredible rugs offer the same option to infuse your interiors with one of the new colors. Use the same recipe as above if going for a large area rug. But if you’ve got a smaller room, such as a powder room, laundry room or bathroom where a new rug is just what you need, go ahead and go bold with vintage rugs.
