Family Fun Making Colorful Halloween Cookies

I am writing this ahead of time to publish on Halloween, ahead of the great storm many of us are about to experience which may put a big X across this year’s Halloween festivities. This year we are pleased to have family visiting, and for us the central theme is always food. We modified our family Christmas cookie recipe to be more seasonally appropriate which became a fun family activity. My brother and I have not been together making cookies since we were young, so this was both nostalgic and entertaining as we initiated his daughter and wife into our childhood traditions.  No boxed mixes or canned frosting for us, everything from scratch. It was fun to pass on the recipes with all the tips and tricks one simply can not write onto a recipe card.  Sharing family stories became enlightening, as one never realizes the view through another’s eyes.

The creativity took off… using gel colors is a whole lot more fun than food coloring. So as we are now preparing for this whopper of a storm, at least we will be all together and have cookies. I hope this finds you and your family safe and warm on the East Coast and for those elsewhere have an enjoyable Halloween. Check out last Saturday’s post on cars for trick or treating.  I’m going to take few days off…  I’ll be back on Monday. 🙂
