Your home is a reflection of you, your family, who you want to be, and you get to decide what this is going to be.  Determining the style for you and your family is the guiding force to help you achieve the interior you want.  Awesome.

Finding your style comes first.  I know, it’s easy to just jump ahead to a theme because it seems so much more fun.  But themes reflect a style.  Choosing a theme first is like painting the nursery pink only to find out it’s a boy.

Ignore any nudge to form judgments and just follow your immediate gut instinct.

Now determine what do you want to say? 

What do you want your home to say about you and it’s inhabitants?

This is a bit deeper than making a statement from an artistic sense.  As a reflection of your family think of adjectives to describe who you want to be.  Here are a few to get started:

• Organized
• Dependable
• Relaxed
• Sophisticated
• Interesting
• Friendly
• Intelligent

What do these words or feelings have to do with a home?  Well, these are impressions people will get from the way you design and decorate your interior.  More importantly, these set the stage for how you want to live.  These are how you develop a style which accurately reflects your family.  (It also is key in making your home work for you but this is another topic.)

Yes it sounds serious and it is, but it is also a great deal of fun.  Your home is your creation!  Create what you want.

Some styles can lend themselves to various themes, for instance a more laid back or casual style has many themes which fit.  However someone with a very strict orderly or sophisticated style is not going to live comfortably in a country farmhouse decor theme.  Your style will help you make a good choice when it comes to selecting a theme for your home decor.  We’ll get to themes on Friday!
