Houses About Color

Super colorful home -Katsioula-Beall_houseWho says the color can only be on the inside of a house?  Color is an element which appeals to everyone in a different way.  It evokes emotion.  There is not a rule which says color can’t be on the exterior of a home or building.  Just as there is no rule which says colorful homes can only be in “southern” or “beachy” climates.

The key to doing color well it to create and make the relationships easily identifiable to the viewer.  “Just because “is never the right reason to use any color on the interior decor or the exterior of a home.

Color must always be purposeful if it is to be enjoyable. Click on the photos for more information on the homes pictured.

One of my favorite architects Margaret McCurry of Chicago based Tigerman McCurry Architects shows an intellectual sensibility to the use of exterior color.  Her colors are purposeful and reflect the owners interests in a palatable way.  Her Blue House is one of my favorites.

I harnessed her for inspiration in our own project.

This blue appears on the interior in different locations but primarily in the blue kitchen.

Color on exterior can be beautiful and can be as appropriate on a vintage Victorian or Craftsman style homes as it is on more contemporary architecture.  The key to success is making the color(s) purposeful and reflected on both the interior and exterior of a home.  If you’ve been following me you know I installed a blue kitchen.

How does your interior reflect the exterior?
