Color is the easiest and fastest way to inject a dose of fabulous into a home. Here is how to add a zippy color to the living room, kitchen, bedroom or any other interior in your home without looking too trendy or like a crazy person lives there. Make your home fabulous by decorating with color.
Pick A Happy Color
Consider colors which make you happy. Look at a color, in real life, paint samples and fabrics are great for this. Pick a few which cause you to smile.
Nix The Ugly Colors
Everyone is different and while color can be very personal, certain hues or color combinations literally suck the life out of the room. Let your gut tell you, not your mind. Sorry but nobody puts beige, rust or sage green on the happy color list.
Easily Rework Existing Rooms
I’m not saying you need to redecorate entirely, but shift the focus. Use your new found happy colors to reframe the feeling of the room. Certain colors like white and light grays can make other colors look better, while browns and muddy tones suck the life out of the colors around them. This may require a fresh coat of paint, slipcovers or new drapery in a color which fades into the background and makes your happy colors shine.
Simply by adjusting the wall color to a lighter version or warm white and shifting to a vibrant orange, blue, green, yellow or any happy color for the accessories, a drab room will come alive.
When working with furniture in a wonderful color, a common mistake is choosing a wall color which competes for attention.
- Instead make the walls a lighter version of the dominant colored furniture
- Add a snappier hues in pillows and other accessories.
- Swap out a dull table with a glass, metal or white one and voila, dull becomes chic.

Here the rich velvety sofa is almost non-existent in front of this dark green wall. (How do you find the sofa?)
- Pull colors from a gorgeous rug
- Contrast the sofa when using a deep color on the walls, which will bring the sofa forward.
- Black and gray against deep colors can be is visually unsettling, exchange for patterned fabrics in a brighter colors to upgrade the room to fabulous.
This kitchen needs help! By replacing the dated stone backsplash with glass tile, a little sparkle can instantly update the kitchen. Refinish dated red cabinets with a livelier red, match the Wolf oven knobs, and make all cabinets on this wall the same color. Next brighten the island, maybe with a happy yellow. Too much brown, and no coordination is a death sentence for this kitchen.
Painting The Walls
When it comes to color, paint can be either your best friend or sabotage your efforts. Wise paint selections come from making the walls a supporting cast member NOT the star of the room.
Hot Focal Points
Trendy and happy colors can be inexpensive and easy to change if you use the most dynamic options purely on accessories…
or artwork.
Color is fun. Color can transform the feeling of a room like nothing else. Regardless of what is going on around us, our homes should be a refuge – a place to kick back, grin and laugh a little. By using the right color, the right way, you can make your home fabulous with color.
