Palm Springs, once the mecca of decadent yet casual Hollywood living, is a thriving vacation hotspot in the California desert. Before my first visit I mistakenly assumed three things about Palm Springs: it would be full of blue-hairs (old people), it was worn out, it would be kinda boring. Wrong on all accounts. We found Palm Springs to be hip, vibrant, transporting and quite cosmopolitan. Let’s take a mini road trip, right from your desktop. May I suggest an offhand knowledge of early hollywood film stars and a quick Wiki of the term Rat Pack to imprint names in your mind you will see and hear throughout Palm Springs. There is no escaping the town’s celebrity roots, this just makes relevant, what one could mistake as kitchy. The Movie Colony neighborhood got its name for a reason, Marilyn Monroe, Dinah Shore, Tony Curtis and Cary Grant all lived there.

Neighborhood Sights

As you look around at the Mid Century Modern Architecture you’ll notice they aren’t afraid to punctuate their front door.

In the Twin Palms neighborhood, artist Kenny Irwin turned scrap into art or at least brightly colored robots. 
Hotel Hot Spots
Don’t assume old means dreary and worn out in Palm Springs. 
The Saguaro is the perfect example of refit and reuse when it comes to buildings. 
The Parker, now a Le Meridian property, is on the larger side but it rides the mod boutique vibe in humorous style. Remember macrame? You’ll see it here along with the 1970’s decorative owl trend. 
Have a meal at The Parker, even if it is only lunch and a cocktail. The food is modern the plating is very inventive. 
Arrive Palm Springs is brand new.
Around Town
Cheerful artwork by the artist Shag really captures the modern vibe. 
Main street is paved with stars but not just the Hollywood versions. 
Plenty of antique shops cater to the home decor buff interested in something cool with a bit of history.
Can’t miss the flagship Trina Turk store for her latest collections.
Regardless of your diet, do not leave Palm Springs without getting a shake from Great Shakes. This is worth every calorie.
Finally if there is one thing you’ll see in Palm Springs as much as Palm trees, it is the use of concrete Breeze Blocks.
Two important travel tips for visiting Palm Springs, rent a car and stay at one of the many remodeled hotels which are abundant in every price range. Palm Springs seems to be on the forefront of reinventing the boutique hotel. The town is full of small establishments with a few rooms or bungalows from back in the day which have received a full out redo or completely brand new ventures offering some of the chicest rooms you’ll find. Point being, you don’t need to go for the typical big hotel name to get a great room.
