Patio Planning – The BEST Adirondack Chair

The BEST Adirondack ChairThere is nothing quite like sinking into a comfortable Adirondack chair on a warm summer weekend afternoon with a stack of magazines piled on one of the arms and a nice big cocktail (and a glass of water) on the other.  Hmmm. Let’s focus on the word comfortable, because not all outdoor chairs are. Update February 2018: We are still loving our chairs and they look as good as they did we bought them!

What makes an Adirondack style chair comfortable?

  1. Proper angle of seat to back
  2. Curved seating area and curved back
  3. Wide arms
  4. Doesn’t have to have a cushion
  5. Rolled front edge on seat

outdoor Adirondack chairWe stumbled upon these colorful chairs at our favorite patio and outdoor store in Toronto. In Canada they call them Muskoka chairs for the Lake Muskoka area. They were unlike any other recycled plastic chair we’d seen. They weren’t flimsy, tacky or a weird faux woodgrain material one might find at the corner hardware. Their solid mass is instantly impressive and immune to the nastiest wind storm.

There are others but I haven’t found one equal in stature or quality to these made by Taylor Recycled Plastic Products in Ontario, Canada. They shipped flat with super easy to follow instructions – so easy a husband can assemble without reading.

Ours have been sitting on our terrace for five years, when I wrote this in 2011. Wind, rain, snow, chipmunk poop, ice, and bright sun have all tried their best to leave their mark. The chairs look the same as the day I unpacked them! The color is 100% UV stable. No painting. No hauling them inside for winter. A hose and maybe a little soap are the only maintenance items.  Best value outdoor chair I’ve ever found.

Outdoor furniture in February!

Anyone, regardless of size, sits in them and loves them. They come in plenty of colors. Normally I would have never considered plastic, only wood.  I used to loose myself in the big white wooden Adirondack chairs at my grandparent’s house as a child, built by my great grandfather.  I liked them so much I threatened to take them when I got older.  Fortunately I found these instead and my arrest record remains clean!
