Each time we visit my hometown in Northern Michigan we’re met with the deep blue of Lake Michigan embraced by green trees and lined with crisp cottages with meticulous white trim it hit me, this is where my love of blue came from. My appreciation for true clear colors came from my childhood environment.
I first wrote this post in 2010 and updated in July 2019 as it still rings true today. Each person had a set of colors they gravitate to and enjoy. Sometimes, actually more often than not when you really dig into it, colors which interest people actually appear in their childhood.

Every new client has a new set of colors we work into a palette for their home decor. When it comes to picking colors, I’ve found it helpful to understand where the color appreciation comes from. When it is a color someone saw and just “love” but there is no other connection it often ends in home decor failure if used in a major way. Color resonates with people for different reasons but having a connection to a particular color or use of colors does help to create a lasting and successful color palette for home interiors.
Personal color palettes often stay with people. Even when people move and have the opportunity to start fresh they tend to stick with the same group of colors, though sometimes in a fresh way. Royal blue has appeared in each of the kitchens I’ve created for myself. Now I have this blue cabinetry which I love and blue metal wall panel on the exterior of our home.
What about you, do you have a particular color palette or color that has followed you throughout your path?
