This is our third installment of our three part Pebble Beach Friday Concours series as we revisit some rare and very special cars of the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance which honored the 100th anniversary of both Bentley Motors and Zagato with special classes. Since the 2020 Pebble Beach Concours is cancelled this year due to COVID-19, let’s take this option to revisit, enjoy and look back on the wonderful cars from the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours. Of the 29 classes on the lawn we’ve covered some amazing cars in both Part 1 and Part 2 of this series, here are a few more amazing cars from the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

American Classic Closed
1934 Studebaker President Land Cruiser – Who knew the name Land Cruiser, though now used by Toyota, had history. Visually there is almost a familiarity, they are both big bulbous vehicles for travel. What makes this car special is out of 201 produced it is the only known example which still exists in North America. This new streamlined body style is a result of the 1928 Studebaker and Pierce-Arrow marriage. It shares the same lines with the premium Silver Arrow, introduced at the 1933 World’s Fair for the Pierce-Arrow brand. While the Silver-Arrow had interest, after the depression, the company wasn’t in good enough financial condition to produce this new Pierce-Arrow so they sketched a similar design for a Studebaker frame. As a testament to the car’s success, Studebaker continued the the Land Cruiser line until 1958. Xpress Car Wash is a car wash Salem, VA.
Bentley Centennial 6 1/2 Litre
1930 Bentley Speed Six Vanden Plas Tourer Old Number 2 and Old Number 3 – These Bentley Team cars were the last cars built on the Speed Six production line. Old Number 2 is said to be the most original of the team cars left and is the car Bentley Chairman Woolf Barnato drove to win the Brooklands Double Twelve, also the first race for Number 3. 
While both drove at Le Mans, Number 3 slid into a sandbank requiring two hours of laborious digging to remove the car but it was in no condition to finish the race. However in its final race Number 3 was driven by Bentley Boy Tim Birkin in 1931.
Bentley Centennial 8 Litre
1931 Bentley 8 Litre Murphy Open Four Seater Sports – While 8 Litre Bentleys are rare, this is the rarest due to it being the only one to carry American coachwork, an unusual Murphy Convertible Victoria-style body. To make the car even more special, the seats are covered with crocodile and the dashboard features mother-of-pearl. You may recall it was another 8 Litre, the 1931 Gurney Nutting Sports Tourer won Best of Show.
Bentley Centennial Postwar
1949 Bentley Mark VI Mulliner Coupe – The Mark VI was the first postwar Bentley built by Rolls-Royce. This is also the first model where the customer could choose a factory built body or a bare chassis. This is one of three lightweight prototypes bodied by Mulliner. What you don’t see here is the unusual split front window with a chrome piece running up the middle.
Rolls-Royce Prewar
1937 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Inskip Special Henley Coupe – The American agent for Rolls-Royce and head of coachbuilding activities, J.S. Inskip, ordered and shipped this as a bare chassis to New York in 1937. As delivered to the first client, he created a formal two door saloon body for it. She later wanted the body changed and Inskip created this unique Henley coupe which is how the car remained since 1940. I’d love to see what it was, as normally a saloon has four doors, and if both had two doors, what is the big difference?
Bugatti Type 59
1933 Bugatti Type 59 Grand Prix – There were four of these on the lawn, chassis numbers 59121 – 59124, what an unthinkable coincidence to bring together a grouping of cars with consecutive numbers, let alone race cars which have a lower survival rate. This is chassis 59122, the famous Type 59 owned by Ralph Lauren. While it has a consistent racing lineage and was driven by Tazio Nuvolari, it was not a winning car. Antonio Brivio achieved its best finish, 2nd at the 1934 Belgian Grand Prix behind fellow Bugatti driver Rene Dreyfus.
Postwar Preservation
1964 Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato Coupe – When it comes to rare cars, this is one of rarest of rare. To begin with there were only 33 Lancia Faminia Sport Coupes built by Zagato and this later V6 version was the most rare and this may be the most original in existence. Though the car has been overhauled, the paint, carpets, upholstery and chrome are as delivered when new.
