Scalamandre Reversible Outdoor Fabric For Patio Umbrellas

Okay, last week I primed you to start thinking about your outdoor/exterior rooms.  They need design too!  Over the next few weeks I’m going to bring you some great outdoor fabric options for your patio, deck, lawn and garden spaces.  Even if you have existing furniture why not update it with a new patio umbrella?  How about an umbrella which is gorgeous to look at from any angle?

  1. Chic and pretty up-to-date colors are available.  Banish the old hunter green plain canvas or ugly striped meshy stuff .
  2. Umbrellas can be pretty on both sides. Logically speaking the underside of an umbrella is just as important as the top side.

Thanks to one of our great American textile companies, Scalamandre, there is no reason to ever look at the wrong side of a fabric again on an outdoor umbrella.  If you recognize the name it is because their fabrics have been used in the White House since the time of Herbert Hoover and they’ve reproduced many historic fabrics for notable homes around the world.  A few years ago they created this stupendous reversible outdoor fabric woven of 100% solution dyed acrylic.

What makes 100% solution dyed acrylic so awesome?

  • Resists damage from mildew
  • UV stable – it retains it color
  • the dye is in the fiber making it fade and stain resistant

Much of Scalamandre’s Island Cloth Collection is reversible I’ll show some non-reversible choices on a later post or check out Victoria Dreste’s post.  There is no wrong or underside of these fabrics.  How often have you seen a fabric and said, “I like the back better?”  No worries about this any longer.  The woven designs come in polka dots, stripes, swirls, botanical and super cute turtles. The fabrics come in all kinds of hot colors: turquoise, bright yellow, orangy-red, and lime green.

Plus some nice neutrals including black and white, yes a real black and white.

Yin & Yang

So why would anyone want to look at the wrong side of a fabric?  You don’t have to, nor do you have to have just what is available at the local home and garden store.  Puh-lease.  Some companies offer COM (customer’s own material) options for their umbrellas.  The teak umbrella above is from Kingsley Bate.  And, no this does not mean more expensive either.  What it means is you will not have the same boring umbrella as anyone else on your street.

More chic outdoor fabrics next week!
