As the year winds down and we look forward to the next, let’s take a look back at some of the best automotive highlights we enjoyed during Car Week 2019. I’ll showcase auction previews, Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, exclusive access with Bentley Motors and McLaren, and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Bonham’s Quail Auction Preview
1968 McLaren M6B Can-Am Chassis 50-12, is one of two cars that Ford and Shelby campaigned for the 1968 season, being the chassis that Peter Revson drove throughout the season. The car sold for US$ 445,000 inc. premium.
The Ex-Bernard Collomb
1961 Cooper-Climax T53P “Lowline’ Formula 1 & 2 Racing Single-Seater T53
Chassis no. F1/9/61. The car was damaged in the Brussels Grand Prix beyond immediate economical repair and its remains were sold to a Swiss dealer/enthusiast who began to rebuild it as a special. The car was eventually reconstructed and restored to its original Formula 1 racing form by expert British specialist and Historic racing star John Harper. As amazing as it was, it was not sold.
Gooding & Company Auction Preview
The immaculate 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Berlinetta sold for a whopping $5,100,000.
RM Sotheby’s Auction Preview
The automotive unicorn, this 1994 McLaren F1 ‘LM-Specification’ set an unbelievable record sale of $19,805,000.
- One of only two examples modified by the factory to LM specifications
- Equipped with unrestricted GTR racing engine and Extra-High Downforce Kit
- One of 64 road cars built; total of only 106 examples
This amazing 1960 Porsche 718 RS 60 Werks sold for $5,120,000.
I’ve never seen so many Aston Martin’s in one location from all eras, including the much photographed and most famous Bond Car, the 1965 DB5 which sold for $6,385,000.
Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance
Admittedly I felt a little bit like a squirrel as my head would turn each time I spotted another vintage Bentley.
The fun part of the Tour d’Elegance is getting up close with the cars and owners in a relaxed environment.
McLaren Hospitality
Guests of McLaren were able to get up close and personal with the new McLaren GT out at Bernardus Lodge.
What made this really special was the large gathering of Sennas, not something you’ll see all the time.
On Sunday McLaren Hospitality became the place to meet up with fellow McLaren family friends.
Concept Lawn
The undisputed star of Car Week, The Quail, around the peninsula and on concept lawn was the De Tomaso Automobili P72.
Bentley Centenary Event
In celebration of Bentley Motors 100th Anniversary, a special invitation only dinner was held on Saturday night. There were vintage Bentley’s everywhere, many of these special cars were not part of the concours on Sunday which made this a rare chance to enjoy them.
We noticed this quite unusual hood ornament on a few of the old Bentley’s.
Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
How cool is this? The important wins were emblazoned on this 1928 Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Vanden Plas Le Mans Sports.
The calm before the storm, or maybe he’s giving the 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Corto Spider a pep talk before judging begins.
Papers are in order for this 1964 Alfa Romeo TZ1 Zagato Coupe.
Here is a true mirror finish on a 1956 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Pinin Farina Coupe.
This hand painted vintage monogram or crest is a great way to sum up the whirlwind which is Car Week. Wherever one looks you are sure to find something to fuel your automotive interests. It was a fantastic week, somehow it keeps getting better year after year.
