The Eyes Of Vintage Racing

The Eyes of Vintage Racing - Ford MustangThe personality displayed on their cars by owners of vintage race cars is always fascinating. Ask a guy why he chose the particular number on his car and the answer is often much deeper than one might think; child’s birthday, wedding date, or the age one was at some important event. When it comes to headlight embellishment, the question isn’t half as interesting as the visual result. There are some very unusual tape designs for headlights. Here are some of the eyes we spy on cars at vintage racing events around the country.

This is far more interesting, I’ve snapped it a couple of times in this, “I just left the paint-booth” look.  Only once, at Pebble Beach were the bandages off.

While reviewing my thousands of photos of vintage race cars, the solid cover plates for headlamps was a dominate characteristic of the racing Porsche.  Surely there is a highly technical reason with deep roots in German engineering.

My favorite… this 356 is just so darned cute! 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder
