Welcome to February and welcome to Kitchen Month. Kitchens are the life source of a home, the ever beating heart. They provide food and nurturing. In today’s active families they function as both the brain trust and activity center. Life revolves in and around the kitchen. They facilitate a beehive of day to day activity and take center stage anytime there is a party. Even for those who do not really cook, kitchens are one of the most important rooms in a home.
To kick-off Kitchen Month our inspiration kitchen comes from Rob Klein, award winning designer and owner of Conceptual Kitchens & Millwork in Carmel, Indiana. He provides all the necessary components for a great kitchen while making it look good at the same time.

What makes a great kitchen?
- The space must be functional and easy to work in – not too large.
- Appliances are relevant and useful, not trendy.
- Ample storage which is easily accessible and located where need be.
- Appropriate lighting.
- Surfaces and materials which are cleanable and look fresh.
Notice I didn’t mention a word about color, style, appliance finish, brands or cabinetry design. Great kitchens can be designed along a contemporary or traditional bent, looks are secondary. Functionality is the most important element in kitchen design.
Over this next month we will address the essential pieces of a kitchen from faucets and sinks, to countertops and cabinetry, plus items in between. We will talk colors, Red Kitchens for Valentines Day, kitchen islands, kitchen appliances and more. By the end of the month your veins will be pumping full of kitchen design ideas.
