The Porsche Road Trip To Colorado

A couple of years ago I suggested we take a road trip, 10 days in a 911 Turbo to be exact.  The Porsche Club of America was having its annual Porsche Parade in Keystone, Colorado.

At first my husband thought I was nuts.  Driving I like, endless days in a car, not so much.  Truthfully the concept of wedging 10 days worth of clothing into the front end of the Turbo was not all that appealing as neither one of us pack light.  He, however is much worse than me.  But it was time for an adventure.  I mean if you are going to have a fun car, what better way to enjoy it than on a whizzing along the interstate exploring the country?We expected a full two day trek to Keystone from Cleveland, full of stops along the way to stretch our cramped bodies.  Not the case, we zipped along in complete comfort from Peru, Illinois to Denver in 14 hours through beautiful sunshine which later shifted to dark skies, a massive thunderstorm, copious downpours, a tornado, hail, and as soon as we entered Colorado, what I would describe as a dirt storm.  Thick brown walls of air mixed with rain coming down so hard one could barely see.  “Let me know if you don’t see headlights coming from the other direction,”  were my husband’s only words of concern.  (Those big fat rear tires produced minimal hydroplane excitement and maximum tracking.  We were very thankful for the AWD.)After tossing the luggage into the condo in Keystone, we did what everyone does when they get to their destination… wash the car.  What?  Everyone doesn’t do this?  The driving tours were especially fun, as groups of 40-50 cars blasted through the Colorado mountains en-mass to take in the colorful countryside and enjoy those cliff-side curvy roads. I was so inspired driving through the Aspens in Aspen, Colorado I came home and began a whole series of Aspen paintings. The Colorado portion of our trip was amazing.  The Porsche Parade event with 1000+ cars from around the country was an exceptional experience.  We enjoyed all things Porsche, met some nice people and saw some great cars. Porsche 906 Carrera 6Plenty of the 356’s were in attendance too.  These were the start of the “cute” curvy little sportscar.  Distinctive and head-turning. I wish I could find it, but just after this picture was taken a guy came up from Mobil 1 and filmed me doing an impromptu endorsement for the engine oil.  It was great, he even filmed my car color matched toes.

Road trips are fun.  Our roundabout way home took us through Santa Fe and along much of old Route 66.   We are just starting to plan another summer driving tour for this year.  Will it be the rest of Route 66 or the north east coast?
