The Pre-Cavallino Ferrari Show

Attending the Cavallino Classic at The Breakers in Palm Beach is like no other.  First of all it is one of the biggest Ferrari gatherings in North America.  The benefit of staying at the hotel is the ancillary car show in the parking lot – which in my world is viewed at least half a dozen times a day.   For concours pics click here. The newbies: SA Aperta, FF, California Spyder and more.  We have a running joke about things being “a sign” usually signaling a future car purchase.  For this trip it was the FF, which I took for a fabulous test drive – not a red one though, silver.  I’ll save that for a future post.  A bit of vintage can also be found amongst the fresh meat.  These cars are meant to be driven as much as appreciated, or lusted after.  One never knows what they might stumble upon in the parking lot.   Lurking behind some shrubbery was this brand new McLaren MP4-12C taking in the competition. Of course someone always has to show off… with a Bugatti Veyron.  I think that is “Lisa blue.”  If that isn’t a sign.Everyone who makes their way back from dinner or the Jet Aviation event on Friday is treated to the same lovely view of The Breakers as they snuggle in for the night anxiously awaiting the following morning.

Half the fun is the hustle and bustle of activity throughout the hotel in the days before the concours on Saturday morning.  New and familiar faces make their way throughout the lobby.  In Palm Beach people watching is an acceptable sport.  Red driving shoes signal a track guy.  Talk, dark and slim guys with Ferrari shirts are often the foreign contingent.  Button down with a brief case (“murse” –  the satchel man purse) is often the true connoisseur, a concours guy with a crew of car handlers.  What, did you want me to take pics of the people?

Stay tuned for more next Saturday!
