On July 31st, 2016 the Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan hosted the 38th Annual Concours d’Elegance of America. This concours, once known as Meadow Brook in the automotive world, originally held on the grounds of Meadow Brook Hall the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of automotive pioneer John Dodge, usually has an overt focus on cars from the glory days of the American auto industry. With over a hundred cars to choose from, it wasn’t so easy to narrow it down to only 10 truly amazing cars.
#10 1975 Lancia Stratos Coupe by Bertone
#9 1938 Horch 853A Phaeton by Horchwerke
#8 1938 Duesenberg Model J 4-Door Touring by Franay
#7 1935 Hupmobile Aerodynamic Coupe
#6 1935 Bugatti Grand Raid Roadster by Worblaufen
#5 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster
#4 1911 Marmon Model 32 Speedster

#2 & 3 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV and brand new Ford GT
#1 Best in Show Winner the 1937 Talbot-Lago T150CSS
Now indulge me a Soap Box Moment, I haven’t had one for a while.
We haven’t been to this Concours in a number of years because we were tired of listening to the old executives from the big three fawn all over each other. However, this was not our experience this time. It was a nice show. Many of the cars were local, but well turned out. Two of the best special classes were Rally Cars which hosted five of John Campion’s first-rate Lancias (#10 above) and The Patterson Collection with five pristine pre-war French (#6) and Italian cars. The location was perfect and the weather glorious. If you live in the midwest, this Concours d’Elegance of America, is an admirable car show.
