Two New Sofas Equal One Happy Client

Time for the big girl furniture!  Last week was as thrilling for me as it was for my client when we installed her new sofas and drapery.  The reality part of an interior design project is always the most fun.  For this project the planning has been easy, my client, Susie, loves color.  It was heaven from the beginning, she loves rich, bold, saturated colors, Pucci and Lilly Pulitzer.   A Trina Turk fabric with the multiple shades of aquas and blues was love at first sight and became our color key for then entire room.   Blue is our neutral.  Aqua, turquoise and a few greens will weave their way  in for excitement. This sketch-up drawing illustrates the basic concept of the living room, minus the ceiling and some additional lighting and furniture.  Note: the gray looking side walls are white but in 3D modeling, shadows are cast from certain view points.  No gray is spoken in this living room.

In my mind – I liked it, drawn – we loved it, in real life it is going to be spectacular.

For new parents with two children under three, we were super mindful when it came to fabric for the sofas.  It must be practical and hold up.   What do kids eat and/or spill?  Milk, orange juice, cheese and a cookie became my arsenal.  We did our own product testing.   No fabric is 100% kid proof and comfortable or attractive.  But, we found a gorgeous Maharam fabric which passed our test.  Onto the design…Susie’s sofas will be the most used pieces of furniture in their room.  These sofas will be around for many years, Susie wanted cool but not trendy.   We wanted modern, with a bit of a Mid-Century vibe plus comfortable to lay on and sit on.  Firm enough but with a little gush factor.   “No saggy corners,” was one of her main directives.  No problem.   Here is Susie three weeks ago, at the sit test.  You can tell, she is already happy and they aren’t even home yet.  “I love them.”Installation day: Sofas  looks great with the color key pillows and between the new geometric drapery panels. If you follow me, you won’t be surprised to learn this trapunto stitching detail I put on the back cushion and outside of the arms came from a vintage car.  Plain colored sofas are great, boring ones are not. “My first adult furniture, ” she proudly exclaimed as she plopped down on the new sofa.  “I just love it!”    Me too, it is so much fun seeing drawings come to life and watching a client smile.   Stay tuned for the final pictures as we are just getting started.
