Lately I’ve been obsessed with white. White white, not creamy white, not off white, not sort of white but real crisp clean white. White can force one, in a nice way, to focus. This interior from Richard Meier‘s early Smith House does this. By making most of the interior white, the inhabitant’s focus is drawn to the view, the outside.
I think when you are passionate about color, white is a dependable companion. It doesn’t sway a color one way or another. It stands right there not wanting to compete but happy to feature another at it’s very best though still remain an equal. Like the perfect spouse. :
A crisp unblemished white can do a lot in an interior. Besides being clean and fresh it plays the ideal supporting role to other items like architectural details, art, furniture, fabrics or whatever else you want to feature.

Why do we love white kitchens and baths? Timeless classics, and like a Chanel 2.55 bag they will never go out of style (and often replicated).
The point is not everything has to be embellished. Where we go wrong is thinking everything has got to be eye candy or a visual magnet. It doesn’t. Use of this trick is what separates a good interior from a bad one.
White interiors are far from boring when part of the overall design scheme. They serve their purpose. Whether the interior is modern, contemporary or historically traditional white as a color can be very au courant. White is a hot color.
