Time to get your schedule in order for the 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Monterey Car Week is bursting with automotive events but the place to be and see some of the world’s epic automobiles is undoubtedly at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Each year Pebble Beach puts on an amazing show of cars from around the world. Bentley Motors and coach builder Zagato are both celebrating their 100th anniversaries, which promises to significantly enhance the group of epic cars on the field on Sunday, 18 August 2019.
The special classes will include:
- Bentley Centennial
- Zagato Centennial
- Bugatti Race & Touring Cars
- Historic Hot Rod “Cover Cars”
Bentley enthusiasts and fans are in for a treat with four separate classes of cars, more than any other marque. We’ll see the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder models, some of the important Derby Bentleys and finally Postwar Bentleys.

What is a Derby Bentley? They are the first Bentley’s manufactured under the ownership of Rolls-Royce, these dependable cars were also called the ‘Silent Sports Car’ in sales literature. Between 1933 and 1940, 2,422 Bentleys were built by Rolls-Royce in Derby and bodied by 40 different coach builders. Many have called the 1930s the pinnacle of the coach built cars in terms of design which is a hint to the awesome cars expected in this class.
This one-off 1935 Bentley 3 1/2 Litre Sportsman’s Coupe bodied by Bertelli Coachbuilding is an example of a Derby Bentley.
Speaking of Bentley, its is surprising how many car enthusiasts are unaware of their historic importance with automotive engineering and racing history. Their single year domination of victory lane at LeMans has never been beaten.
Bugatti was the other marque dominating the racetrack back in the day. Racing sold cars, racing created many of the brands we know and love today. This pearly white beauty was driven by three Bugatti’s factory team drivers in 1927, though not at LeMans where Bentley swept victory lane.

Some of the most elegant cars ever on the road are without a doubt some of the Bugatti touring cars.
Rumor has it, Jim Govro’s “Tweety Bird” channeled Deuce Roadster has been extended an invitation.
Currently there are twenty-two classes in total with other important car classes to include Prewar Rolls-Royce and Mercedes, Grand Touring and Competition Ferraris, Packard, Duesenberg, and European Classics. As always the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance promises to be full of interesting and stunning automobiles. Each year we look forward to seeing and learning about a car we’ve never seen before.
